It can be varying shades of grey, from pale silver to a rich blue-gray to a dark charcoal or almost black. The fleece grows in long, fine, and lustrous distinctive curls. Soft to the touch, the smooth silky curls feel clean, having little lanolin. If you use this wool for XXL knitting, then knit a bit tighter than normal. It is better to use knitting-needles and not to arm knit with this wool. Tip: twist the wool one turn at each stitch. Then you spin the roving lightly and the wool gets more bandage, so that it hairs less. How long is this roving? Wool is usually sold per weight. But, the process of turning raw fleece into carded wool is quite time-consuming. And that is what this post is really about. After shearing, the fleece needs to be skirted and sorted, to take away wool that is too short, dirty or tangled. The first one I decided to try was the Gotland wool fibers. I had purchased both roving and combed top, and I tried spinning the roving first – that’s the lighter gray one in the middle of the picture. To spin worsted, use a medium to long staple length wool. Keep your staple length over 3 inches, anything under that is going to be tough to work with. My first ever traditional 3-ply in a 60% Polwarth/30% silk blend from LeAndra of Created by Elsie B. I am very happy with the final yarn.
